Update: 11:00pm on 2/26

Forrest has been fortunate to have 3 visits from amazing therapy dogs during his hospitalization. It’s no surprise, as a lifelong dog lover, that he really connected with these wonderful canine “therapists!” We also marveled at the powerful impact the dogs’ visits had on other patients and on all of the hospital staff. We envision the day that Forrest, healed and healthy, is able to take his own dog to visit hospitalized children, to share his story of recovery and the special joy that a dog can bring to children. So it just seemed natural to prepare our own beloved Labrador, Sundance, to become a certified therapy dog. Especially since Sundance had the advantage of early training with Colleen Hayduck, our star CCI volunteer puppy trainer. Kent jumped online and found us a TDI (Therapy Dog International) certification test in Georgia, but the clincher was we only had 10 days to prepare for the test! No problem! We can do this! Kent drove Sundance down to Atlanta so that he could take a refresher obedience course with a local trainer at Comprehensive Pet Therapy. And just to make sure we were ready, Colleen volunteered to drive up from southern Georgia yesterday to tune up Rae and Sundance prior to the exam today.

Early this morning the team gathered in Lawrenceville, GA for the event. It was tension packed. 30 dogs were being run through a grueling human and animal gauntlet which demanded total concentration of the handler (a very nervous Rae) and the gorgeous wanna-be therapy dog (Sundance). Both had to overcome multiple simulated distractions, loud deliberately obnoxious people swinging crutches, zooming circles around them in out-of-control wheelchairs and walkers, barking dogs, groping strangers, squealing children, and tempting hamburgers on the floor that Sundance had to pretend he didn’t even see! All these challenges are necessary to insure that a certified TDI dog can maintain his cool no matter what a hospital or nursing-home environment throws his way. Somehow the stars aligned at just the right moment, we drew a kindly evaluator who gave us a fair shake and Sundance gave it is his very best effort, turned his nose up at the hamburger, smiled thoughtfully at the squealing children, and did NOT jump in the man’s lap who clearly invited him to share his wheelchair! I have to admit I was totally surprised, but ….We passed! Sundance earned his TDI certification, official patch, and TDI bandanna that will allow him to share with other hospitalized children who, like Forrest, would love to receive the joy of a wet kiss, warm fur, and that unconditional loving gaze of a Labrador Retriever.

Of course this victory demanded a celebratory visit to Shepherd Center’s Secret Garden so that Sundance could share the great news with Forrest and let off some steam with a proper game of fetch! After Forrest and Sundance played fetch for awhile, several of us played catch with Forrest, both hands, single hand and then right and left hand… Forrest beat us all.

- From Rae and Sundance (certified therapy pair) and the rest of Team Forrest (which included today, super brother Austin, Dad this weekend and Monday and Colleen, super dog trainer).

PS from Sundance: I’d like to thank all the two-legged friends who made it possible for me to reach this cool goal today! Deep Run retrievers gave me a strong start, Robyn for keeping me at the Farm, Pops for driving me to Georgia, Aunt Lynn for all the late night walks, Patricia at CPT, Colleen, and Vangie who made space for me at the TDI test!

  1. Congratulations, Rae and Sundance!! You Allens are all totally unstoppable! :)

Robyn really misses Sundance, but I know how pleased she is that he's there with you all and can be such a wonderful catalyst in Forrest's progress.

We'll be visiting Robyn today at the farm. I'll be sure to give all the horses a pet, a hug, and a carrot or two.

  2. I remember looking at one of the pictures when Forrest just started being able to smile again... Looking at this, now, makes me a little teary eyed. You can see his progress in his smile. To his continued recovery - we're all thinking about you everyday, Forrest, Austin, and the rest of Team Forrest. Keep up the good work! I love seeing pictures like these.

  3. Sundance,

Congratulations to you and Mum on your TDI certification! We're very proud of you both! And, we also continue to be soooo proud of Forrest, Austin, Pops and the rest of Team Forrest. Since we ARE part of the family, we ARE part of the Team, too, right?

We want to know when we're going for our TBI (Therapy Birds International)certification!

We love & miss you all. It was so cool to see the family together again. . .all that was missing was us :-)

  6. OKay, you guys! You got me covered with goose bumps and wiping those happy tears! The smile says it all! Congratulations, Mom and Sundance! That is AWESOME!!! Sajen can't wait to romp with such a superstar (and give him some pointers on how to look the cutest to get more snacks).

Keep up the great work...every day, one step at a time, you keep on making us so proud.

  7. Huge congrats to Sundance and of course team Allen which includes many non Allens!

So inquiring minds want to know where Sundance is staying in Atlanta. What is life going to be for the super dog in the near future? Can he stay there with all if you? That would be so cool.

  8. So, I've missed a few days of the blog...what a wonderful surprise to catch up and see the fabulous news. Congratulations to Rae & Sundance on their amazing achievement. It's just so ironic that Sundance had that early CCI training, and to then come full circle to receive his TDI certification at a time when it was most needed! As another post commented above, I, too, cracked a huge smile and followed with a few "happy" tears. Keep up the good work...all of you.
    Lots of love,
    Michele xx

  9. Forrest
It is great to know you are getting to visit with Sundance- there is nothing like the love of your dog to help you feel better!
Keep up the great work, it is so exciting to see your progress!

Congratulations to Rae and Sundance! You were very smart to do such sophisticated training with Sundance as a puppy. It sure paid off. I don't think we could teach our dogs to ignore a hamburger on the floor if we had 10 months let alone 10 days.

  11. Team Forrest, +Sundance now too, and Forrest,

We normally read this blog out loud to each other, but this one...no way! Couldn't hardly get two words out before tears of amazement for Sundance's amazing feat, Rae's courage to perform and of Forrest's ginormous smile. Best we could do one this one was pass the ipad to each other and grab the Kleenex!

  12. We are IMPRESSED! Congratulations to Sundance and the whole Team Forrest for this wonderful accomplishment! Rae, you are amazing with your foot in a boot, no less. Congratulations, too, to Austin on becoming certified to be a walking companion to Forrest. You are THE Bro of the YEAR! What a dizzying list of accomplishments this past week. We're rooting for you every day and leading the forward charge for Dolphin Quest, at this end. Thank you for being YOU, each one of you!

    Love, Diane and Jay

  13. I'm so glad to hear all this good news! Congrats to Rae and Sundance! I hope Sundance will now be allowed to stay and help in Forrest's further recovery.

What a great smile, Forrest! I'm sure Sundance was totally thrilled to see you, too!

Also, response to Jack & Carmen's note above, they do have Therapy birds now. I've read articles about them and think that is really great! We used to have a Cockatiel and we loved him dearly.

Keep up the good work everyone!!!!!
